OK, I've got a question for all of you...With the rising prices of what seems to be EVERYTHING these days, has your gift giving changed as a result? What do you prefer to give as a gift...money or something a little more personal?
I've always been the kind of person who enjoys giving a handmade gift I've especially made for that person or at least something I've gone to the store and picked out. I enjoy the whole process, especially the presentation of the gift with creative wrapping, etc.
This year we were invited to 8 graduation open houses. Now, I'm not sure about you, but I don't have an extra $160 just laying around to give as gifts - all within the span of a couple of weeks.
So this is what I opted to do. I found these keepsake boxes for $10 so I bought 4 of them to give as gifts. There's also a photo album, 2 picture frames and a small gift book inside the box - in addition to the storage space for cards. The outside of the box is a royal blue suede.
The other 4 graduates received ready-made scrapbooks I put together. The scrapbooks were 20 pages each that started at birth and went all the way through high school graduation. All they have to do is insert their pictures. The mom of one of the girls who received a scrapbook made a comment to me that she & her daughter had been talking about having someone make a scrapbook for her...they said they were gonna ask me to do one!

ReplyDeleteWell, in answer to your questions, I wish I was crafty and able to make stuff. I can make homemade cards but I always second guess myself and I dont think Im any good so I dont end up making homemade stuff to others.
So when I give gifts I always go over and above to buy things I know the person Im giving to would like for sure. I always try to buy their taste in stuff, not mine. And I try to make it look like a homemade package by wrapping it in my signature style (white tissue paper and ribbon)
I would give more homemade stuff if I could make stuff thats for sure!
And I prefer to recieve homemade stuff.. or craft stuff so that I can make my own homemade stuff.
Theres just something about the fact that someone took TIME to do it for ME. It doesnt get any more special than that. It truly doesnt. That alone means the world to me.
I just bought my Nan (grandmother) things she would like (a white hand towel set and a package of pretty notecards) WHile its not homemade..its a real cute "homey" looking gift.
Id rather do that than give $$ thats for sure. I just think that if I give someone money, they will think I was too lazy to go shopping for a gift or that I wouldnt take up time in my life for them.
The next gift I have to get is for Roc's teacher, for end of school year which is the end of this month. I was thinking about trying to make one of those candy bouquets you make! I dont know if I can do it though. I tried making stuff like that before and could never get it to turn out ok! I tried to make a topiary once and oh my.....it was TERRIBLE LOL!!
Haha! I just read Candy's comment and she has said it all perfectly!!! Although I have made the mistake and have given money, sometimes too much, instead of taking the time early on to try and create something or buy something homey....which I prefer to do and to receive, but what if someone gives you a fairly expensive gift and then you give them something you made??? I always think they think I am cheap? or that they just throw it out? I know, that is my negative thinking. I know I love those kinds of homemade thought out gifts, but I am always afraid the receiver of mine will not feel the same :(
