"Coffee Table...Ottoman...Chiropractic Table???"

Now, how's that for a title?! No "before" picture of this project but imagine a plain 'ole boring coffee table - not even real wood! (gasp!) Oh, I KNEW what I really wanted...but wasn't willing to fork over a bunch of $$$ for :) I wanted a nice big comfy ottoman that matched my decor. So, I took the cheap and easy way out and did it myself.

I found some fabric I liked on the $1/yd. table at the local Wal-Mart...can't even remember how many yards I bought. Getting the fabric was the easy part of this transformation. Coming up with an alternative to paying a lot for a good sized piece of thick foam was initially challenging. Then I remembered about that 'egg crate' foam I already had - yay! First, I used spray adhesive to adhere two layers of egg crate foam cut to the table size. (Bumpy sides together.) Secondly, I covered the foam with regular quilt batting; then added the final layer of the fabric and just stapled it all the way around the table. Thirdly, I made a skirt out of a long strip of fabric, pleated it at the corners and stapled that on, as well. Decorative fabric tabs were added at the corners with gold upholstery tacks just for a fun look.

My ottoman alternative has held up quite well in the three years since it was done. The fabric I used was corduroy and has proven to be quite durable. Let me tell ya, the "ottoman" has had many pairs of feet rest upon it...it's been danced on a time or two (ha ha), not to mention its multi-functional use as a "chiropractic table" LOL For real, it actually does work well to massage sore back muscles on! he he he

  3. That is a great idea! I, too, want a soft coffee table because I want to use it for extra seating. I'm going to be looking around for a re-do!
